North Country School

Program of Study

The North Country School curriculum is designed in conformance with national standards. We are deliberate in delivering a curriculum that gives our students a solid base of skills and coursework that will be transferable to their next school. At the same time, our progressive mission inspires an exciting variety of hands-on projects, from student performances of Shakespeare to field-based research into glacial features and snow morphology.

The organization of the curriculum varies according to grade level. Grades 4, 5, and 6 meet in homerooms, each taught by a team of two teachers. The academic program in grades 7, 8, and 9 is departmentalized, with core subjects meeting five times weekly.

Athletics

North Country School encourages children to try new experiences, gain confidence, learn new skills, and become more resourceful. Students are required to take at least one daytrip and one overnight trip into the mountains during each academic year, as well as to climb Cascade Mountain, the Adirondack high peak in our backyard, before they graduate. All students are also required to participate in our horseback riding and snow sports programs, with regularly scheduled lessons in season.

Sports include: horseback riding, biking, hiking, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, as well as traditional sports.
